Class 1 Professional
Requirements

Holders May

Operate any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles other than a motorcycle (Class 6).

Operate a Class 6 vehicle as a learner only.
Steps to Obtain

Written Exam: To start the process of obtaining your Class 1 driver's licence, you must first take the written examination. Come into our office with your identification to take a 30 multiple-choice question examination. If you wish to come in to write an exam, please ensure that you arrive no later than 90 minutes before we close.

Air Brake Certificate: Proof of your air brake "Q" endorsement or a course completion certificate from an approved air brake course is required before a road test can be given. This includes drivers of farm vehicles registered as tractor-trailers.

Medical Exam: A medical form must be completed by your doctor to ensure the safety of yourself and others. You can download and print this medical form here.

Class 2 Professional

Operate any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles that the holder of a Class 5 operator may operate.

Operate any single motor vehicle with three or more axles.

Operate any single motor vehicle with three or more axles towing a trailer with one or more axles if the trailer is not equipped with air brakes.

Operate Class 2 or Class 4 type vehicles without passengers.

Operate Class 1, Class 2 and Class 6 vehicles as a learner only.

Note: Drivers of single-motor vehicles registered as farm vehicles do not require an air brake “Q” endorsement.
Holders May Not

Operate a motor vehicle that has a seating capacity of more than 15.

Operate a motor vehicle to transport passengers for hire.

Class 4 Ambulance & Taxi
Requirements

Minimum Licensing Age: 18

Must hold a valid Full Class 5 driver’s licence or higher.
Holders May

Operate Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, and Class 6 vehicles as a learner only.

Operate any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles that the holder of a Class 5 operator’s licence may operate.

Operate a bus that has a seating capacity of not more than 24 excluding the operator.

Operate an ambulance or taxi.

Class 5 GDL Basic
Requirements

Minimum Licensing Age: 18, or 16 with the consent of a parent or guardian.

Must hold a valid Class 7 licence with at least one year of driving experience under the previous licence.
Holders Are Subject to the Following Conditions
-
Cannot have more passengers than there are seat belts.
-
Cannot serve as an accompanying driver to a Learner.
-
Can otherwise operate any motor vehicle as though they held a full Class 5 licence.
-
Fewer demerit points are allowed than for fully licenced drivers before licence suspension.
-
Cannot upgrade to a commercial licence.
-
Must have a zero alcohol level at all times when driving.

Class 6 Motorcycles
Requirements

Minimum Licensing Age: 16

Must hold a valid Class 7 licence with at least one year of driving experience under the previous licence.

Must be suspension-free for a minimum of one year before testing.
Requirements for carrying passengers

Adequate passenger hand grips.
-
Adequate passenger seat.

Adequate footrests.
Additional Conditions

When learning to drive Class 6 vehicles, an instructor must be at least 18 years old, must have a Class 6 non-GDL licence, and must either sit behind the learner on the motorcycle itself or immediately follow the learner in another vehicle.

Identification: If you don’t already have an Alberta ID Card, you will need to provide proof of legal entitlement to be in Canada. If you were born in Canada, this will be a Birth Certificate, a valid Passport, or an Indian Status Card. If not, we also accept Work and Study Permits, Permanent Residency, and Citizenship Certificates. Applicants in Canada on a Visitor Permit are NOT eligible to apply.

If you are under the age of 18, you must have a parent or legal guardian to accompany you. If you are over the age of 18, we will require proof of your Alberta address.

The applicant must pass an eye exam administered by our friendly staff.
